Atisthoulya (Obesity) concept according to Ayurveda

When Mamsa (muscle tissue) and meda (fat/adipose tissue) grow excessively in the body, they lead to obesity. This is a result of agnimadya (slow metabolism) at the dhatu (organ system) level resulting in Kapha vriddhi. Associated vaatkapha vriddhi is also there at times there.

According to Charak Samhita, obese people and thin people suffer with one after other disease regularly.

Causes-
Day time sleep Lack of exercise
Genetic factors Lack of sexual activity
Those who are self-contended Excessive intake of food (Frequent nourishing meals)
Those who are reckless and don’t take any sort of stress also Excessive intake of kapha increasing food (high calorie food that is slow to digest)
Symptoms & complications-
Weakness Excessive thirst
Foul body odour Excessive hunger
Excessive sweating Decrease in quality of life
Decrease in body stamina Body fats are in disproportion
Body sensitivity alongwith low resistance power Heavy weightleading to lack of energy, zeal & zest & dullness
Increase in mass of Hip region (including thighs), breast and abdomen Increase in Meda or Adipose tissue leads to slow digestive fire at other progressive levels of Channels

 

Ayurveda line of treatment for obesity- If BMI of the patient is greater than 35 (moderate obesity) or 40 (severe obesity), following treatment steps may be taken-

Shodhan Chikitsa (purification done by Panchkarma)- Panchkarma therapies are carried out depending on 4 major criterias-

  1. bahudosh (multiple doshas/ humors are involved)
  2. chronicity of the disease
  3. bahubal (more strength of the disease and patient can tolerate the procedures well)
  4. Upadrav (Complications of obesity and other diseases are also present)
  5. Affordability by the patient

Ruksha udvartana (dry powder massage externally) and vaman (medicated emesis), virechan (medicated purgation) and vasti with ruksha, ushna & tikta dravyas (medicated enema) basti .

Shaman Chikitsa- Treatment is done with Ayurvedic medicines & herbs including home remedies. Shaman chikitsa for obesity is ideal for-

  • New onset disease
  • Multiple doshas are not involved
  • Alpbal of doshas
  • Upadrav (complications of the disease are not present or not chronic & severe)

Single herbs used in obesity- Chirbilva, Arjun, Hemwati, Shatavari, Punarnava, Sunthi, maricha, Pippali, Yava, Dasamool, guggul, Rason,Vidang, palash, chitrak, Mustak, Amla, harad, bahera, Daalchini, green coriander, pattharchur (acorus calamus)

Kashayam – Punarnavadi kashayam, Dasamool kashayam, Mahamanjisthadi kashayam

Avelah & Pak – Dasmool haritaki, Kansa haritaki, Soubhagya sunthi pak

Kshar – Palash kshar, Kalayanak kshar, bhunimba kshar
